THE LAST PICTURE SHOP
THE LAST PICTURE SHOP
For over forty years, Ümit has kept the flame of celluloid alive in a small East London shop stacked floor to ceiling with reels, posters, and stories. He is 65, a proud Cypriot Cockney, a projectionist, and one of the last guardians of analogue film in the UK. To step inside his shop is to step into another time.
Now that space is under threat.
Rising costs and relentless development are closing in. What once felt eternal now feels fragile. So we decided to do something bold, hopeful, and cinematic.
This is our documentary feature film The Last Picture Shop.
A funny, tender, and unpredictable journey about friendship, obsession, and what we choose to fight for. At its heart lies a simple question. How far would you go to save the thing you love?
We are close to bringing this film to life. With your support, we can complete production and post production, protect the legacy of this extraordinary space, and share Ümit’s story with audiences who still believe in the magic of cinema.
If you have ever fallen in love with a film, a record shop, a bookshop, or a place that made you feel less alone, you already understand why this matters.
We did it. Thanks to your incredible support we reached our Crowdfunder target of £50,000 and even went beyond it, finishing at £53,000. We honestly could not have done this without you.
Your support means we can now move into the edit, complete the sound mix, and bring the colour grade to life so the film becomes everything we know it can be. It also allows us to start building the cinematheque inside the shop, which will help keep it alive and ensure it continues to be a place for film lovers for years to come.
It means a lot that so many people believe in this story and in what we are trying to make. Thank you for the trust, the encouragement, and for being part of this journey with us.
We are looking forward to sharing updates as the film progresses 🎬
With gratitude
Liam and Ümit 🙏
